Merging and Redirecting Tags
Sometimes you need to connect two tags together—for example, when replacing a temporary tag with a permanent one, or consolidating content from multiple tags. tagd-ai's merge and redirect feature handles these scenarios.
Common Use Cases
- Replacing temporary tags - Swap a hand-written tag for a factory-printed QR code
- Consolidating content - Merge multiple tags into one
- Equipment upgrades - Old asset's QR still works, pointing to new asset's info
- Reorganization - Redirect outdated tags to their replacements
Merge Types
Content Merge (Recommended)
Combines content from both tags into the target tag:
- Both QR codes show the merged content
- Content from the source tag is added to the target
- Scanning either QR code displays the combined information
Best for:
- Consolidating related tags
- Combining information from temporary and permanent tags
- Merging duplicate content
Simple Redirect
The source tag redirects to the target tag:
- Source tag points to target tag's content
- Target tag content remains unchanged
- Original source content is preserved as backup
Best for:
- Replacing one tag with another
- Retiring old tags while keeping QR codes working
- Pointing multiple QR codes to the same content
How to Merge or Redirect Tags
- Open the tag you want to merge or redirect (the source tag)
- Click ⋮ → Merge or Replace Tag
- Select the merge type:
- Content Merge - Combine both tags' content
- Simple Redirect - Just redirect to the target
- Enter the Target Tag ID (the tag you want to merge with or redirect to)
- Review the process flow visualization
- Click Merge Tags or Create Redirect
Finding the Target Tag ID
The target tag ID can be found:
- In the tag's URL:
tagd-ai.com/XXXXXX - In the tag settings
- At the top of the tag editor
What Happens After Merging
With Content Merge
Before:
[Source Tag] → Content A
[Target Tag] → Content B
After:
[Source Tag] → Redirects to Target
[Target Tag] → Content A + Content B
Scanning either QR → Shows combined content
With Simple Redirect
Before:
[Source Tag] → Content A
[Target Tag] → Content B
After:
[Source Tag] → Redirects to Target
[Target Tag] → Content B (unchanged)
Scanning source QR → Shows target's content
Source content → Preserved as backup
Important Considerations
Cannot Be Easily Undone
Merging tags is a significant action:
- Content Merge permanently combines the content
- Simple Redirect can be removed, but requires admin access
- Always verify you have the correct target tag before proceeding
Before Merging
- Verify the target tag - Make sure it's the correct destination
- Review content - Ensure you want to combine or redirect
- Note both tag IDs - For your records
- Test both QR codes - Confirm they're working before the merge
After Merging
- Test the source QR code - Verify it now shows the target content
- Check the merged content - Ensure everything transferred correctly
- Update your records - Note which tags were merged
Troubleshooting
Can't Find Merge Option
- Only the tag owner can merge tags
- Verify you're signed in to the correct account
- Check if the tag is already part of a merge chain
Redirect Not Working
- Wait a few minutes for caches to clear
- Clear your browser cache
- Verify both tags are accessible
Wrong Content Appearing
- Confirm the correct target tag ID was entered
- Check if the merge type was set correctly
- Contact support if the issue persists
Merge vs Transfer
